About the Event
Through most of the 20th century, some scholars repeatedly made the claim that little from the Biblical period had been discovered in Jerusalem area excavations, leading a few to cast doubt about the Israelite presence there. While that idea still persists, the archaeological evidence gathered over the last 50 years clearly disproves it.
This richly illustrated session will take students on a virtual tour of the most informative Jerusalem area excavations confirming and illuminating ancient Israel’s presence in the city. For the First Temple period (ca. 960-586 BCE), we’ll delve into the discoveries from the digs led by Benjamin and Eilat Mazar, Yigal Shiloh, Gabriel Barkay and others. For the Second Temple Era (ca. 515 BCE-70 CE), we’ll see how these and other scholars have revealed the growth and ultimate grandeur of the city over 2000 years ago. You can find the outline of this course as well as additional learning suggestions through this link here.
