Author Rachel Biale will share stories from her memoir about growing up on a kibbutz in Israel in the 1950s and 60s—a time when children spent from birth on in a Children’s House. While Rachel's parents soon realized that no community can live up to its utopian ideals, Rachel's kibbutz youth was a robust and empowering one. Biale’s lively and engaging storytelling offers a window into the kibbutz experience.
After growing up in Israel, Ms. Biale came to the US in the 1970s, obtaining degrees from UCLA and Yeshiva University. She has worked as a family and child therapist, a parenting counselor, in adult Jewish education programs and community organizing. She has written prolifically for adults and children, including an acclaimed book on women and Jewish law.
