About the Event
Today, the Abayudaya of Uganda number around 3,000, up from 300 at the time of Idi Amin. The history and current situation of this unique Jewish community will be explored by Rabbi Laurie Matzkin, who studied with the current Chief Rabbi of Uganda, Gershom Sizomu during her rabbinic studies; she last visited the country in 2019.
Rabbi Laurie Matzkin grew up at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. From 2009-2016, she served as Director of Lifelong Learning at Congregation Kol Emeth in Palo Alto, and currently serves as Family Educator, PJ Library of Silicon Valley Manager, and Mindful Jewish Journeys Educator at the Addison-Penzak JCC in Los Gatos.
