About the Event
Due to circumstances beyond our control, Dr. Jacobson has had to cancel his talk on The Ethics of Human Genome Engineering. We hope to reschedule for the winter or spring of 2022. We will refund tickets purchased for this event.Â
Scientific advances have led us to a point where we can now ask about whether to set boundaries on human gene engineering:  A "yes" to altering the genome in a fetus or already-born to counter a disease or debilitating physical condition, but a "no" to engineering a healthy human for specific physical and/or mental traits and capabilities? The question of whether to place limits on human gene editing will be addressed by Joseph Jacobson, Associate Professor at MIT where he leads the MIT Media Lab's Molecular Machines Group and is a founding member of the Center for Bits and Atoms. His lab has pioneered developments in synthetic biology for a range of applications including programming cells to produce new pharmaceuticals, renewable chemicals, fuels and food. His lab is currently focused on the application of machine learning and AI to design small molecule and protein therapeutics including novel CRISPR molecules. In the private sector, Jacobson was the co-founder of E Ink Corporation (the technology behind the Amazon Kindle), Gen9 and DeepCure and was a founding director of the non-profit foundation, One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), which designs and builds laptops for education for kids around the globe.
Admission: $8. Â Upon registration, you will first receive a confirmation email. An hour before the program begins, we will email the Zoom link you need to join the event. If you don't see these emails, please check your spam/junk folder to retrieve them. We suggest you add "notifications@wixevents.com" to your contacts list as well.
